June 29th, 2008David Addington, who is one of the Bush Administration’s legal experts and can be charitably described as a cross between Dick Cheney and Chewbacca, appeared before a subcommittee to discuss the use of interrogation techniques and “stunned” his questioners with the contempt he showed for them. Toward the end of the session, he answered a question about whether or not he had ever discussed “waterboarding” by claiming that he could not answer “because al-Qaeda might be watching.” The chic comment to make about this story is “I wonder if he would answer after a good ‘waterboarding,’” and I suppose I could succumb to being chic just this once but al-Qaeda might be reading.
