"Independent" in the same sense that Ken Starr was, meaning "not very independent" indeed!

Start and Finish

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

A bill was passed today to allow more drilling for oil on the Gulf of Mexico. I don’t have a problem with the measure in and of itself, but it’s sure-fire proof that the Government still doesn’t take a future with less fossil fuel seriously. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I just don’t see any sustained progress on the issue by the Republican Government — imagine that!

I did find a bit of good news, reading about the environment, and it was this committment.

Improving energy efficiency, lowering energy costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are the goals for more than 80 major corporations, utilities and regulatory authorities that signed on to the National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency (NAPEE) July 31. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is organizing the effort, gaining commitments from the organizations that they will implement the plan’s recommendations for underused energy efficiency techniques that could save Americans hundreds of billions of dollars on gas and electric utility bills.

I’ll believe that it’ll be carried out when I see it, but it’s a start. It’ll take a different President and a reshaped Congress to finish.
